from the sierra
In August I took my first real backpacking trip, 7 days in the back country above Sequoia National Park.
We started at Mineral King, doing a 40 mile loop with 2 day hikes of about 12-14 miles each into Lost Canyon and the Kaweah Gap area.

memorial day weekend in la mision
Every Memorial Day weekend in La Mision is the 'festival de la mision' complete with rodeo, Mexican folkloric dancing, and a big bonfire.
It's not just fun, but also a feast for the photographic senses.

"Cabalgada"
For her 50th birthday, Marty Harriman, who loves horses and riding, decided that the best way to celebrate would be to get everyone on a horse.
In Spanish the term for a procession of horses, a calvacade, is 'cabalgada.'
These pictures are from the cabalgada along the beach in La Mision.
If you'd like to see the entire collection of photos, they are on my smugmug site

life and death
My neighbor Joe asked if I would give him a ride. I put the camera in the car and we headed off on a beautiful day.
As we approached the station where he needed to make a report, I saw this cemetery.
I was struck by its sense of abandonment contrasted with the faded vibrancy of the fake flowers.

around the world in 30 days
From March 10 to April 9 I traveled literally around the world:
LA to Bangkok with a brief stint in Chiang Mai, to Cairo to Belfast and a day in Dublin, to Paris and back.
I lost my camera my second day in Paris, so most of those photos are with my mom's borrowed camera and with my iPhone.
More about my trip can be seen on the 'musings' page, in the archives for March/April.

inauguration
When Erica and I decided (only a week before) to go to the inauguration of President Barack Obama we thought we'd be on the mall with the masses and were just thinking it would be good to be there.
Through a crazy series of events we wound up with amazing seats to see this historic occasion.
These are photos from the day.
